西漢元狩二年（前121年）置，治所在今甘肅省榆中縣北。屬隴西郡。後改屬天水郡。東漢永平十七年（74年），改屬漢陽郡。漢靈帝中平年間（184年－189年），地為羌胡所佔，遂廢。十六國時期，乞伏國仁在此地築勇士城。
