假紅樹科只有1屬1種，是單種科，假紅樹只生長在中美洲從哥斯達黎加到厄瓜多爾一帶。
本科植物是常綠喬木，枝條叢生；單葉互生，有腺點；花大，花苞長，花瓣5數；果實大，直徑達13厘米，類似椰子，皮乾燥，但前面有一個尖端突出。
1981年的克朗奎斯特分類法將其列在山茶科中，1998年根據基因親緣關係分類的APG 分類法認為應該單獨分出一個科，2003年經過修訂的APG II 分類法認為可以選擇性地與四籽樹科合併，但2007年5月7日新修訂的版本將其合併到四籽樹科中。
