反应物的固体合成需要先熔化，才能形成复杂的离子化合物。在其它情况下，这些固体反应物不需要先融化，而是通过固相反应路线（英语：Solid-state reaction route）反应。在这个方法中，反应物被反复精细研磨成糊状，然后加热到反应物混合物中的离子可以一起扩散的温度。
