數據集是指數據的集合，[1]而且數據集應該能被電腦處理[2]。數據集中的值可以是數字，例如實數或整數，比如用厘米表示人的身高，但也可以是標稱數據（即並非數值的數據），例如人的種族資訊。數據集中的數據也可能存在缺失值，此時必須以某種方式指出數據存在缺失。
