在物理科學中,神經工程學是新興的、用工程技術研究中樞和周圍神經系統的功能並操作其行為的交叉學科研究領域。該領域從計算神經科學、實驗神經科學、臨床的神經病學、電子工程學和活神經組織的信號處理等領域汲取養分,並包含了機械人學、計算機工程學、組織工程學、材料科學和納米技術等學科中的一些內容[1]。

神經工程的兩大目標是通過神經系統和人造設備間的溝通來修復和增強人體的功能。當前的研究主要着眼於:
神經工程是一個新興學科,相關的文獻資料較為有限,但正在迅速增長中。第一份專門針對神經工程學的學術期刊是2004年創刊的神經工程學雜誌(The Journal of Neural Engineering) (頁面存檔備份,存於互聯網檔案館)。最早產生的專門針對該領域的學術會議是2003年於意大利卡普里島舉辦的首屆國際神經工程學大會。
