至元十一年（1274年）設置武定路。治所在南甸縣（今雲南省武定縣）。轄境相當今雲南省武定縣、祿勸彝族苗族自治縣、元謀縣等地。明朝洪武年間，改為武定府。清朝雍正年間，改為武定州。
