唐朝咸亨二年（671年），析富平、華原、蒲城三縣置，治所在今陝西省富平縣東北美原鎮。初屬宜州，後屬雍州京兆府。天祐三年（906年）為鼎州治。五代後梁為裕州治。元朝至元元年（1264年），廢入富平縣。
