尼爾森於1935年開始參加職業高爾夫球比賽，1945年連續奪得11場美巡賽勝利，感受不到挑戰的他於1946年即宣佈退役，隱居在德克薩斯。

1968年，美巡賽中的達拉斯公開賽更名為拜倫·尼爾森公開賽。
