源自中古英語 nymyl、nemel、nemyll、nymell (「敏捷的,迅捷的;準備就緒的;有能的」),古英語 nǣmel (「善於學習的」)和古英語 numol (「能夠拿穩的」)的合併形式,兩者均源自niman (「拿,取」) + -el、-ol (聯想後綴),等價於nim + -le。對比德語 nehmen、哥特語 𐌽𐌹𐌼𐌰𐌽 (niman)、古諾爾斯語 nema (「拿」)。詳見nim。
