鐵飛燕是一名交通收費員。2010年5月4日，鐵飛燕隨父親在四川綿陽旅遊時，跳入河中救起4名落水的工人。她的事跡被報道之後，網友評論其為「最美90後女孩」、「英雄，中國的驕傲」、「90後的楷模」。2011年9月20日，鐵飛燕獲得第三屆全國道德模範提名獎。[2]
2013年2月中旬，鐵飛燕得知自己當選為第十二屆全國人民代表大會代表。[2]
