生平
1983年6月，畢業於湘潭大學固體力學專業，獲學士學位。1987年6月，畢業於北京理工大學一般力學專業，獲碩士學位，同年進入湖南大學任教。歷任湖南大學工程力學系副主任、科技處副處長、科技處處長、研究生部主任、研究生院常務副院長、院長。1996年，晉升為教授。2000年6月，畢業於湖南大學結構工程專業，獲博士學位。2001年，任湖南大學副校長。2011年9月15日，任湖南大學校長[1][2]。2011年底，當選為湖南省科協副主席。2016年1月，卸任湖南大學校長[3]。
2017年2月，任廣西大學校長[4]。2018年1月，當選第十三屆全國政協委員[5]。2022年4月，卸任廣西大學校長[6]。
獎項
1999年獲機械工業部科技進步二等獎，2007年獲教育部自然科學獎一等獎，2008年獲湖南省科技進步一等獎。
