西魏廢帝二年（553年）設置洋中郡，治所不詳，約在今西鄉縣一帶。與洋川郡、豐寧郡、懷昌郡同屬于洋州。北周天和五年（570年），廢除懷昌郡。隋文帝開皇三年（583年）廢洋川郡、豐寧郡、洋中郡，屬縣直轄于洋州。
