1950年置。在今雲南省中北部。轄楚雄、雙柏、鎮南、牟定、姚安、大姚、鹽豐、永仁、祿豐、廣通、鹽興等縣。專員公署駐楚雄縣（今市）。1953年元謀、武定、安寧、羅次、祿勸、富民六縣劃入。1956年安寧縣劃歸昆明市。1957年撤銷，改設楚雄彝族自治州。
