1961年，其參加中國人民解放軍，歷任歷任排長、師作訓科參謀、副科長、團參謀長、副團長、團長。1980年，抵解放軍軍事學院學習，後擔任師參謀長。1983年，擔任中國人民解放軍第1軍副參謀長。1985年，擔任中國人民解放軍第1集團軍軍長。1988年授予少將軍銜，1990年，任廣州軍區副參謀長。1994年，擔任蘭州軍區參謀長，1996年晉升中將軍銜。1999年，任蘭州軍區司令員。2004年，晉升上將軍銜[1]。
