鼩鼱是一種體型細小、外貌有點像一種長鼻鼠的哺乳綱動物──雖然兩者的外貌有點相像，但其實並沒有任何關係。鼩鼱的腳有五隻有爪的腳趾。
另外，樹鼩鼱和象鼩鼱雖然名稱上有「鼩鼱」二字，但並不屬於鼩鼱科，而是分別屬於樹鼩目及象鼩目。
鼩鼱在世界的分布很廣泛：在主要的溫帶大地上，就只有大洋洲的新畿內亞、澳大利亞及紐西蘭並沒有原生的鼩鼱；在南美洲，雖然亦有鼩鼱，但主要集中在北部，特別是哥倫比亞一帶。
科學家發現在冬天時，這種動物的身體會隨之縮小，連大腦也是[來源請求]。
