生平
1977年畢業於南京工學院（1988年更名東南大學）機械系後留校任教，1987年在南京工學院獲碩士學位，1990年公派英國留學，1994年在英國威爾士大學獲博士學位。歷任東南大學機械工程系副系主任、系主任，東南大學副校長。
1996年9月調任國家教育委員會高等教育司司長，1998年7月起任教育部高等教育司司長。2001年4月起任北京師範大學校長。2008年當選第十一屆全國政協委員[2]，代表教育界，分入第四十二組。並擔任教科文衛體委員會專委。[3]
2012年返回東南大學任教。
2024年4月7日逝世[1]。
