明朝洪武十年（1377年），改賀州置，治所在今廣西壯族自治區賀州市賀街。明朝、清朝時屬平樂府。1949年11月間，中國人民解放軍第四野戰軍攻占賀縣[1]。同年，建平樂專區，賀縣為專員公署駐地。1951年，專署遷駐平樂縣。1952年，賀縣縣治遷至八步鎮。同年，信都縣併入。1997年撤銷，改設賀州市。
