神秘獸最初被考特（1995）描述為努米底亞獸科的一個新種^[1]。在古生物學家能夠接觸到來自利比亞的鈍獸屬材料後，該收藏中未描述的材料促使Delmer（2009）創立了神秘獸。^[2]
