廣灣

以英語為例，「gulf」一詞（其他語言中的同義同源詞有法語的golfe、德語的Golf、西班牙語、葡萄牙語、意大利語的golfo等）傳統上指被海岸線包圍的大型、蜿蜒、可通航的鹹水體^[1]。

一般來說，「gulf」比「bay」（其他語言中的同義同源詞有法語的baie、西班牙語的bahía、葡萄牙語的baía、意大利語的baia等）要大^[2]。「gulf」與「bay」有時也混用，例如孟加拉灣在英語中為「Bay of Bengal」，但在西班牙語和葡萄牙語中則為「Golfo de Bengala」。在漢語中，「gulf」與「bay」一般均譯作「灣」而不作區分。

許多gulf是主要航運區，如波斯灣（Persian Gulf）、墨西哥灣（Gulf of Mexico）、芬蘭灣（Gulf of Finland）、亞丁灣（Gulf of Aden）等^[3]。
