西魏時設置，為雉陽郡治所。縣治位於河南省南陽市南召縣東南皇路店鎮皇路店附近。隋朝改屬清陽郡，開皇三年（583年），將西鄂縣地改為向城縣。唐朝時曾更名武清縣。五代後周顯德三年（956年）時廢，省入方城縣。
