来自中古英语 route，源自古法语 route、rote (“道，路，径”)（对比现代法语 route），来自拉丁语 (via) rupta (“用强力打开的（道路）”)[1][2]，源自rumpere viam（“开辟道路”）。中国古代行政区划的义项是意译自汉语 路 (lù)。
