在中国大陆，分布于新疆、内蒙古、河北、江苏、福建、广东等地。该物种的模式产地在丹麦。 小鷸英名Jack Snipe，一般認為這個常用名稱來自於威爾斯語中代表鷸的單詞giach（發音為重音g），但現代詞典表示其實來源於男性名字Jack。

否真实存在保持怀疑态度。鸟类学家科林·密斯凯利博士（Colin Miskelly）认为Hakawai是南岛沙锥（英语：South Island snipe）求偶时发出的声音，另一些研究者则认为Hakawai是已灭绝的哈斯特鹰的民间记忆（英语：Folk memory）。
