早年在基尔大学、法兰克福大学修读戏剧研究和德国学，再在海德堡大学交换学习哲学、社会学和艺术史。他最有名的是在1979年提出宪政爱国主义概念。[1]他被伯恩哈特·沃格尔评价为继汉娜·阿伦特、列奥·施特劳斯和埃里克·沃格林后同一时代政治学规范化的代表人物。
