2014年11月8日，美国总统巴拉克·欧巴马提名她出任司法部长，2015年4月23日美国参议院投票，确定提名通过，洛丽泰·林奇因此成为首位出任司法部长的女性非洲裔美国人，亦是欧巴马政府第二位司法部长，而前任司法部长埃里克·霍尔德同样是非洲裔。
