生平
渣文在英格兰米德塞克斯北林（Northwood）出生[1]，全名Michael Derek Elworthy Jarman。父母为Lancelot Elworthy Jarman及Elizabeth Evelyn（闺姓Puttock）[5]，父亲在纽西兰出生，是一名军官。
渣文在坎福德学校（Canford School）寄宿，1960年起在伦敦国王学院就读，1963年到伦敦大学学院的斯莱德美术学院继续学业。
