少鳞棘首鲷为辐鳍鱼纲金眼鲷目金鳞鱼亚目金鳞鱼科的其中一种，分布于印度太平洋区，包括留尼旺、日本、越南、澳洲、罗德豪岛、纽西兰、复活节岛、夏威夷群岛、智利海域，栖息深度14-220公尺，体长可达30公分，栖息在礁石区的洞穴或缝隙，夜行性。
