番号来自日语番号（ばんごう）[1]，本义为数字，或是号码。有时特指军队编制的编号。如国军番号、红军番号[2]。做为隐语，有时也暗指日本成人影片（AV），源自AV作品均有的规格产品编号。工业界番号，通常指的是各种等级、系数，如机油番号[3]。
另见通话表，常使用于军警单位或用于无线电通话使用，利于辨识避免数字误听。
