大历四年（769年）齐映榜进士。[1]还等不及调官，便归江宁省亲。朝中显贵与著名诗人李嘉祐、李端、韩翃、钱起等都替他赋诗饯行。[2]泽潞节度使薛嵩聘为从事。唐德宗兴元元年（784年），任太子正字。[3]贞元中，兼监察御史。[4]严羽认为冷朝阳“在大历才子中为最下”。[5]有集一卷，已佚。《全唐诗》存诗十二首，《全唐诗外编》补一首。
