鹰嘴珍龟原生于南非开普省，前足只有四个脚趾，雄性的鼻部在繁殖季节会变成红色或橘色。因为个头很小所以极易被捕食，同时由于栖息地破坏及偷猎的缘故，其数量在不断减少。[3][6][7]
