1950年由永州专区改名。在今湖南省南部。辖零陵、新田、宁远、江华、永明、道县、东安、祁阳等县。专员公署驻零陵县（今永州市）。1952年撤销，划归湘南行署区。1962年恢复零陵专区。1964年设潇水林区管理局。1968年改零陵地区。
