雪花球是透明的球体，传统上用玻璃制作，用缩小的空间模拟特定场景，像是下雪的场景。雪花球中还有包着水，做为雪花球中当作媒介，让“雪”能漂落。要让雪能漂落，必须摇晃雪花球让白色物体震荡。接着雪花球放回原位，白色物体在水中慢慢漂下来。有些雪花球搭配内建的音乐盒能够播放乐曲，有些雪花球外面有装饰。
