阿巴拉一词主要用来区别于另一阿拉伯牧牛族群加巴拉， 根据Braukämp（1993)的说法，一些阿巴拉人在从萨赫勒地区进入热带稀树草原后，经历了文化变迁。这导致牲畜种类转向牛只，这更适合热带草原环境。
