阿塞尔

阿塞尔（英语：Asser），中文译名有阿塞^[1]、阿瑟^[2]、阿色耳^[3]。生卒：？—约909年），盎格鲁-撒克逊时期教士、学者、史家，出生于威尔士，早年在圣大卫寺院当修道士，886年被西撒克逊（又译威塞克斯）国王阿尔弗雷德（又译阿尔弗烈德、艾尔弗雷德）聘请入朝，协助国王学习，此外曾在康斯伯里（英语：Congresbury）、班韦尔（英语：Banwell）、德文、康沃尔、舍伯恩（又译瑟波恩）等地出任教职，约在909年去世。阿塞尔曾为阿尔弗雷德进行著作及翻译，较有名的有阿尔弗雷德大王的传记《阿尔弗雷德传》。

阿塞尔是威尔士人，关于他的名字“阿塞尔”（Asser），学者Simon Keynes（英语：Simon Keynes）、Michael Lapidge（英语：Michael Lapidge）指出是来自希伯来语，《旧约圣经》里就曾有人使用Aser（或Asher）做名字，意思是“被祝福的”（“blessed”或“blessedness”），意思与威尔士语里的“Gwyn”（古威尔士语作“Guinn”）相同，所以他可能选用“阿塞尔”做教名。^[4]早年曾入达费德（英语：Dyfed）王国的圣大卫寺院（位于彭布罗克郡）当修道士。885年，阿塞尔奉阿尔弗雷德大王所召，到南撒克逊（又译萨塞克斯）晋见国王。886年，国王邀请阿塞尔入朝，负责协助国王学习拉丁语。与此同时，阿塞尔获国王重用，历任康斯伯里（英语：Congresbury）隐修院院长、班韦尔（英语：Banwell）隐修院院长、德文教区主教、康沃尔教区主教、舍伯恩（又译瑟波恩）主教（892至902年）等教职。^[5]

约于908至909年去世。^{[注 1][6]}

• 《阿尔弗雷德传》，为记载西撒克逊（又译威塞克斯）国王阿尔弗雷德（又译阿尔弗烈德、艾尔弗雷德）事迹的传记，以拉丁语写成。^[7]

评价

阿尔塞凭着其史学著作《阿尔弗雷德传》而垂名后世，英国学者Simon Keynes（英语：Simon Keynes）、Michael Lapidge（英语：Michael Lapidge）指出他为后世留下首部盎格鲁-撒克逊君王传记，对英国早期历史研究的价值无可估量，然而阿塞为粉饰国王事迹，不免令国王生平显得模糊。^[9]

1. 有关阿塞的卒年，《盎格鲁-撒克逊编年史》的多个稿本中，有的记载是909年，有的记载是910年。现代学者Simon Keynes（英语：Simon Keynes）及Michael Lapidge（英语：Michael Lapidge）认为是在908至909年。
