谢尔登·艾伦·希尔弗斯坦(英语:Sheldon Allan Silverstein,1930年9月25日—1999年5月9日)是美国诗人、创作歌手、音乐家、作曲家、插画家、编剧和儿童文学作家,笔名为谢尔·希尔弗斯坦。在他的一些儿童文学作品中,他自称为谢尔比叔叔(Uncle Shelby),同时,他在部分卡通作品中的签名用的是S·S。

希尔弗斯坦出生在美国芝加哥,他五岁开始学习绘画,一开始是临摹阿尔·卡普(Alfred Gerald Caplin,1909-1979,以Al Capp著称,美国,幽默作家)的作品。如他日后所言:“我做的第一件事就是临摹Al Cappl,他对我的影响很深。他的作品对我而言,奇迹,他知道如何画人、外形、身体、手,知道怎么才能画得好,因此我从他那里学得绘画的技巧。”他也受到了gag风格漫画家维吉尔·帕齐(Virgil Partch,1916-1984,四、五十年代美国最著名和多产的杂志gag漫画家)的影响。他告诉《出版者周刊》的Jean Mercier,“小时候,大约12岁到14岁之间吧,我更想成为一个好棒球手,或者跟姑娘们一起玩,但是我球技不好,也不会跳舞。幸运的是姑娘们也不喜欢我,我在那些事上付出得并不多。所以我开始绘画和写作。何其有幸那时我没有可模仿的对象,也没有影响深刻的作品。我开始形成自己的风格;我的创作早于我知道特伯(James Turber,1894-1961,美国作家、漫画家、著名的智者)、本奇利(Robert Charles,1889-1945,美国幽默作家、戏剧批评家及演员)、普耐斯(George Price,1901–1995,美国漫画家)和斯坦伯格(Saul Steinberg,1914–1999,出生于罗马尼亚的美国漫画家,插画家)这些人。直到大约30岁,我才目睹他们的作品。等我到了可以吸引姑娘们注意的年龄,我已沉迷于工作,对我而言,工作更加重要。并不是我不愿做爱,而是工作已经成为一种习惯。”
他进入了芝加哥艺术学院学习,但仅一年就离开了。他的作品先是发表在Roosevelt Torch(罗斯福大学学生刊物)。服役之初,他被安排在Pacific Stars and Stripes报社做版面编排和印刷工作,Pacific Stars and Stripes刊登了他的漫画作品,他的第一本书Take Ten——他服役期间所作的Take Ten系列漫画合辑,在1955年由Pacific Stars and Stripes年出版。
