该大学成立于1839年，当时称法姆维尔女子神学院（Farmville Female Seminary），多次易名后在1949年改名朗伍德学院（Longwood College），2002年7月1日才升格为大学。其名是来自拿破仑·波拿巴流放圣赫勒拿岛期间居住的朗伍德宅（Longwood House）。^[6]
