媒体马戏团

媒体马戏团（英语：Media circus）是一个口语的隐喻或惯用语，用来描述媒体在被报导事件的报导范围超出比例的新闻事件，例如在现场的记者数量，新闻媒体刊登或播出的数量，和媒体的炒作程度。此用语是透过与马戏团相比的方法来批判媒体，通常是负面的，且被认为是反对如实观察的惯用语。在1970年代时，该用语被用作这种意思已很普遍^[1]^[2]。

Thumb — 在2004年8月，一名恐怖份子对新泽西州纽瓦克的保德信金融集团（英语：Prudential Financial）总部大楼和纽约市其它建筑物的威胁的证据的消息公布后，新闻媒体卫星上行线路卡车与摄影记者聚集在其门外。

尽管构想更为古早，术语“媒体马戏团”大约在1970年代中期时开始出现。林恩·哈尼（Lynn Haney）在1976年写的书是一个早期的例子，她写了有关运动员克里斯·埃弗特的爱情故事：“毕竟，他们的恋爱，一直都是‘媒体马戏团’^[3]”。几年后，《华盛顿邮报》也有刊登一个类似的恋爱例子，“格蕾丝王妃仍然因为她在1956年嫁给兰尼埃亲王的婚礼成为了‘媒体马戏团’而精神受创^[4]”。自1970年代以来，随着时间的推移，这个词已经越来越受欢迎。

成为批判媒体的原因，因使用的人而异。然而，大多数批评的核心是当其它更重要的新闻议题因为报导炒作议题而得到较少的公众关注时，将会产生显著的机会成本。

媒体马戏团在1951年的电影“倒扣的王牌（英语：Ace in the Hole (film)）”中成了重要的剧情手段，该电影是关于一名自私的记者报导了一场矿坑灾难，使得一个人受困而死在地底下。这部电影冷嘲热讽地探讨了媒体和他们所报导的新闻之间的关系。该电影后来被以“盛大的狂欢节（The Big Carnival）”之名重新发表，其中“狂欢节（carnival）”在当时是指“马戏团（circus）”。
