巨翅目

巨翅目(学名:Titanoptera),又称钛翅目,是已灭绝的新翅下纲昆虫,生存于石炭纪晚期至三叠纪[1]。与现今昆虫相比,巨翅目的体型十分巨大,部分物种的翼展可达36厘米(14英寸),甚至是40厘米(16英寸)[2][3]。

巨翅目与现存的直翅目为近亲,但具有与之相比较大的体型、较弱不具有跳跃能力的后肢、可抓握的前肢、以及较延长的口器。从巨翅目的外型以及身体结构上看来,它们被认为是掠食者[2]。
翅膀
巨翅目的前翅上无论雄性或雌性均具有类似现存蟋蟀的弹器结构,可能是为了用于鸣声(英语:stridulation),但也被认为能用于反射光线或透过快速煽动来产生劈啪声,借此来与同伴沟通或吓退掠食者。生存于石炭纪晚期的特亚巨虫属被认为是目前已知最古老能透过翅膀发声的物种[1]。
飞行
部分巨翅目物种被认为仅具有滑翔,而不具备飞行能力。如此的例子包括泰坦巨虫属的寻常泰坦巨虫,虽然它们具有与现存直翅目帝王螽斯(英语:Pseudophyllanax imperialis)接近的后翅面积,但帝王螽斯本身仅保有极差的飞行能力,而寻常泰坦巨虫身躯部分重量更在帝王螽斯之上。除了寻常泰坦巨虫外,其他巨翅目物种也都具有相较体型比例较小的后翅[1]。
栖息与分布地
除了特亚巨虫属外,其他确认属于巨翅目的化石分别发现于吉尔吉斯、澳洲、大韩民国。另外于俄罗斯也有发现疑似为巨翅目的化石,科学家认为整个环特提斯洋可能都是巨翅目物种的栖息地[3]。
分类学
巨翅目的分类位置上一直存在着争议,最初它们被认为与Gerarus(英语:Gerarus)是近亲[4]。但2007年的研究认为巨翅目应是属于直翅目,并演化自同样已灭绝的Tchomanvissidae(英语:Tchomanvissidae)[5]。不过,之后又有研究质疑这项结果,巨翅目与Tchomanvissidae的关系仍存有争议[1]。此外,发现于二叠纪的Permotitan(英语:Permotitan)、恐巨虫属(英语:Deinotitan)、 Monstrotitan(英语:Monstrotitan)被认为可能不属于巨翅目 [1]。Jubilaeus(英语:Jubilaeus)原先被认为属于中巨虫科,但之后的研究则认为它们应属于Tcholmanvissiidae[5][6]。 Steinhardtia(英语:Steinhardtia)原先也被认为属于巨翅目,但它们的化石缺乏了巨翅目翅膀上特有的翅脉结构,甚至更被认为可能其实是植物化石(可能为真蕨类)[1]。
