鹼義有三，曰阿倫尼烏斯、布朗斯特-勞里、路易斯也。阿倫尼烏斯鹼者，溶水而得氫氧根也；布朗斯特-勞里鹼者，受質子者也；路易斯鹼者，供電子者也。
鹼者，味苦，具蝕性，多作清潔也。阿倫尼烏斯鹼者，皆溶水，可通電，乃電解質也。具氫氧根不溶水者，乃鹽基也。並酸可得水得鹽，乃中和也。
