噓噏，今謂（呼吸），一説（吐納），生物之一理也，即引氣入肺以敦與內氣之易也。而入氧氣與出二氧化碳之跡，謂呼吸作用。據葛洪抱朴子載：「胎息者能不以口鼻嘘噏，如在胎之中。」，故胎不能自息，須賴母之副與臍帶所輸之帶氧血以息。
