Tofalar (oʻzlarini tofa, toxa deb atashadi, ilgarigi nomi — karagaslar) — Rossiya Federatsiyasining Irkutsk viloyati, Nijneudinsk rayoni (Ud a, Biryusa, Kan, Gutara, Iya va boshqa daryolari boʻyi)da yashovchi xalq. 0,7 ming kishi (1990-yillar oʻrtalari). Turkiy tillarning uygʻur guruhiga mansub tofa tilida soʻzlashadi. Dindorlari — pravoslavlar, lekin, shomonlik ham qisman saqlangan. Tofalarning shakllanishida Janubiy Sibirning ket, turkiy, moʻngʻul va boshqa qabilalari ishtirok etgan. Bu jarayonda asosiy rolni turkiylarning toba (dubo) qabilalari oʻynagan. Tofalar sharqiy tuvaliklarga — tojinliklarga qarindosh boʻlib, faqat 1757-yildan keyin ulardan ajralgan. 19-asrga kelib alohida xalq sifatida shakllangan. 20-asr boshlarigacha Tofalar quyidagi urugʻlarga boʻlingan: kash, sariqkash, chogʻdu, qorachogʻdu, cheptey va boshqa Mashgʻuloti — ovchilik va koʻchmanchi bugʻuchilik boʻlgan. 20-asrda Tofalar oʻtroq hayotga oʻtgan. 1980-yillardan boshlab Tofalarda oʻz tarixini oʻrganish va madaniyatini qayta tiklashga intilish kuchaygan.[1]
