Windows NT була розроблена «з нуля», розвивалася окремо від інших ОС сімейства Windows (Windows 3.x та Windows 9x) і, на відміну від них, позиціонувалася як надійне рішення для робочих станцій (Windows NT Workstation) і серверів (Windows NT Server). Windows NT дала початок сімейству операційних систем, в яке входять Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7.
