18. Akademi Ödülleri, II. Dünya Savaşı'ndan sonra düzenlenen ilk törendi. Bu nedenle tören, savaş sırasında yapılan törenlerden daha gösterişli oldu. Savaş yıllarında dağıtılan alçı heykelciklerin yerini altın kaplamalı bronz heykelcikler aldı. Yönetmen Billy Wilder'ın acımasız ve sosyal açıdan önemli draması The Lost Weekend en fazla ödülü aldı. Hem En İyi Film Akademi Ödülü'nü hem de Altın Palmiye'yi kazanan ilk film oldu. Joan Crawford, zatürree olduğunu iddia ederek törene katılmadı (her ne kadar Mildred Pierce ile En İyi Kadın Oyuncu Oscar'ını kazanmayacağından emin olduğu söylense de). Ancak ödülü kazandı ve ödül o gece yataktayken kendisine verildi.^[1]
