Tempo, satrançta ve diğer satranç benzeri oyunlarda, "dönüş" ya da tek hamle olarak tarif edilen terimdir. Bir oyuncu daha az hamle ile istenen sonucu elde ettiğinde, oyuncunun "tempo kazandığı" söylenir; Bunun aksine, bir oyuncu gereğinden fazla bir hamle yaptığında, oyuncunun "tempoyu kaybettiği" söylenir. Benzer şekilde, bir oyuncu rakibini ilk planına göre değil de, zorlayarak hamle yapmaya teşvik ederse, rakibin hamleleri boşa harcadığı için "tempo kazandığı" söylenir. Tempo kazanan bir hareket genellikle "tempo hareketi" olarak adlandırılır.
