సిద్ధాంతం (Theory) దీనికి వివిధ శాస్త్ర విభాగాలలో వివిధ పద్ధతుల ప్రకారం అనేక నిర్వచనాలున్నాయి. సైన్సులో, సిద్ధాంతం ఒక గణిత లేక హేతుబద్ధ విశదీకరణ, లేదా పరీక్షించదగు సహజపద్దతి లేదా దాని నమూనా. సిద్ధాంతము, సత్యమూ రెండు పరస్పర విరుద్ధ ధృవాలు కానక్కరలేదు. చెట్టుపై నుండి రాలే పండు భూమ్మీద పడుతుంది, ఇది సత్యము. దీనిని గమనించి ఇచ్చే నిర్వచనమే సిద్ధాంతము. ఈ సిద్ధాంతము ఆధారంగా విశ్వ గురుత్వాకర్షణ సిద్ధాంతము, సాపేక్ష సిద్ధాంతము న్యూటన్ నిర్వచించాడు. సాధారణ వ్యవహారంలో 'సిద్ధాంతము', ఆలోచన, అభిప్రాయం, లేదా ఓ విషయం పట్ల అవగాహనతో కూడిన భావన. ఈ వ్యవహారంలో సిద్ధాంతము, సత్యము పై ఆధారపడక పోవచ్చును; అనగా ప్రకృతిలో గల సత్య అసత్యాల పట్ల తమ తమ అభిప్రాయాలే సిద్ధాంతాలు.
