భారతీయ మామిడి యొక్క వృక్ష శాస్త్రీయ నామం మ్యాంగిఫీరా ఇండికా. అనాకార్డియాసియా కుటుంబానికి చెందిన మామిడి జాతి రకాలలో ఇది ఒకటి. భారతదేశం అడవులలోను, సాగు ప్రాంతాలలో కనిపించే ఈ రకాలు ప్రపంచంలోని ఇతర ఉష్ణ ప్రాంతాలకు పరిచయం చేయబడింది. ప్రపంచంలోని అతిపెద్ద పండ్ల వృక్షం ఇది. ఈ చెట్టు వంద అడుగుల ఎత్తు పెరిగే సామర్థ్యం కలిగి ఉంది. ఛాతి ఎత్తు వద్ద దీని చుట్టుకొలత సగటున పన్నెండు అడుగుల నుంచి పద్నాలుగు అడుగులు ఉంటుంది. కొన్నిసార్లు దీని చుట్టుకొలత ఇరవై అడుగులకు చేరుకుంటుంది. ఈ మామిడి జాతులను నాలుగువేల సంవత్సరముల క్రితం నుంచే పెంచుతున్నట్లుగా తెలుస్తుంది. భారతదేశం నుండి తూర్పు ఆసియాకు క్రీ.పూ 400 నుంచి 500 సంవత్సరముల మధ్య ఈ జాతులు తీసుకురావడం జరిగింది. తరువాత 15వ శతాబ్దంలో ఫిలిప్పీన్స్ కు ఆ తరువాత 16వ శతాబ్దంలో పోర్చుగీస్ వారి ద్వారా ఆఫ్రికా, బ్రెజిల్ కు తీసుకురావడం జరిగింది. 1753లో లిన్నేయస్ చేత సైన్స్ కోసం ఈ జాతులు వర్ణించబడ్డాయి. మామిడి భారతదేశం, ఫిలిప్పీన్స్, పాకిస్తాన్ యొక్క జాతీయ పండు. క్రీస్తుశకం 4వ శతాబ్దంలో సంస్కృత కవి కాళిదాసు తను రచించిన పాటలలో ఈ మామిడిని గురించి వివరించాడు. దీని కంటే ముందు క్రీస్తుపూర్వం 3వ శతాబ్దంలో అలెగ్జాండర్ ఈ పండును రుచి చూసినట్లుగా భావిస్తున్నారు. తరువాత చైనా తీర్థయాత్రికుడు హ్యూయన్ త్సాంగ్ క్రీస్తుశకం 7వ శతాబ్దంలో ఈ మామిడి పండును రుచి చూసినట్లుగా భావిస్తున్నారు. తరువాత 16 వ శతాబ్దంలో మొఘల్ చక్రవర్తి అక్బర్ బీహార్ లోని దర్భాంగాలో లక్ష మామిడి చెట్లను నాటించాడు. ప్రస్తుతం ఈ ప్రదేశాన్ని లాఖీ బాగ్ గా పిలుస్తారు.

ఔషధ లక్షణాలు
Mangiferin (a pharmacologically active flavonoid, a natural xanthone C-glycoside) is extracted from Mango at high concentrations from the young leaves (172 g/kg), bark (107 g/kg), and from old leaves (94 g/kg). n shows an exceptionally strong antioxidant capacity. It has a number of pharmacological actions and possible health benefits. These include antidiabetic, antioxidant, antifungal, antimicrobal, antiinflamatory, antiviral, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, anti-allergic and anticancer activity.. Along with Salacia it is being investigated for its possible anti-obesity action. In ayurveda, one of its uses is clearing digestion and acidity due to pitta (heat), sometimes with other mild sours and shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) and guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia).
