ఒక విశిష్టమైన విధిని నిర్వహించడానికి ఏర్పడిన కొన్ని ప్రత్యేకమైన కణాలు (Cells) ఒకే విధమైన పిండస్థాయి పుట్టుక, ఇకే విధమైన నిర్మాణాని కలిగి ఒక సముదాయంగా ఏర్పడతాయి. ఇలాంటి సముదాయాన్ని లేదా పొరను 'కణజాలము' (Tissue) అంటారు. ఒకే క్రియా ప్రమాణంగా ఇలాంటి వేరువేరు కణజాలాలు కలిసి పనిచేస్తుంటే ఆ ప్రమాణాన్ని 'ఆశయం' లేదా 'అవయవం' (Organ) అంటారు. కొన్ని అవయవాలు కలిసి ఒక వ్యవస్థను ఏర్పరుస్తాయి.
ఉపకళా కణజాలాలు చాలా రకాలుగా గుర్తించారు.
ఆధార కణజాలాలు వివిధ రకాలుగా విభజించారు.
