1960 தொடக்கமே கல்வி, தொழில் வாய்ப்புகளை நாடி தமிழர்கள் ஐக்கிய இராச்சியம் அல்லது பிரிட்டனுக்கு புலம் பெயர்ந்தார்கள். 1983 இலங்கை கலவரங்களுக்கு பின்னர் கூடிய தொகையினர் பிரிட்டனுக்கு புலம்பெயர்ந்தார்கள். இன்று ஏறத்தாழ 150 000 - 200 000 தமிழர்கள் பிரிட்டனில் வாழ்கின்றனர். இவர்களில் பெரும்பாலனவர்கள் இலங்கைத் தமிழர்கள் ஆவார்.
