Lakomstvo (lat. avaritia) je neochota podeliť sa o niečo čoho má človek zvyčajne značný prebytok a lipnutie na hmotných i nehmotných statkoch. Je to aj nekontrolovateľná túžba zhromažďovať majetok a neochota deliť sa čo i len o neupotrebiteľné prebytky. Bujnosť, prepych, nenásytnosť, hrabivosť, osobný zisk, ale aj krádeže a úplatkárstvo. Vyznačuje sa túžbou získavať čo najväčší majetok a realizovaním tejto túžby.
V kresťanstve patrí lakomstvo medzi sedem hlavných hriechov. Evanjelium podľa Lukáša (LK 12,15) znie - "I riekol im: Dajte si pozor a varujte sa akéhokoľvek lakomstva, lebo život človeka nezáleží v rozhojňovaní jeho majetku."
Podľa ďalšieho textu z biblie je chamtivosť forma modloslužobníctva (kol. 3,5). Zatiaľčo niektorí majú problém porozumieť tejto súvislosti, je najčastejším vysvetlením, že lakomci si vážia hodnotu peňazí alebo majetku viac ako Boha. To môže byť tiež spojované s uctievaním zlatého teľaťa. Ďalším chápaním je, že slúžia chamtivosti, aby nazhromaždili čo najviac vecí, ktoré sa domnievajú, že sú cennosti a tým sa koncentrujú na vlastného boha a vytvárajú si hrdosť na tieto nazhromaždené cennosti a tým pádom sa koncentrujú na vlastné ego.
Buddhisti veria, že chamtivosť je založená na nesprávnom chápaní spájania bohatstva so šťastím.
