Prvá zmienka o meste pochádza z roku 1331, v roku 1441 sa nachádza prvá zmienka o Bečkereckej pevnosti. Mesto sa pôvodne volalo Veliki Bečkerek, v roku 1935 bolo premenované na Petrovgrad[2] podľa kráľa Petra I. Posledným premenovaním mesto prešlo v roku 1946, kedy dostalo mesto dnešné meno podľa partizánskeho bojovníka Žarka Zrenjanina.[2] V súčasnosti je Zreňanin centrom prevažne poľnohospodárskej výroby; od roku 1746 má vlastný pivovar.[2] Polovica všetkých priemyselných objektov sa venuje potravinárstvu.
