Dejiny hradu siahajú pravdepodobne až do 11. storočia.
Objekt kaštieľa v súčasnej podobe vznikol spojením dvoch krídiel vonkajšieho hradu a to západného krídla s bastiónom a južného krídla. Opevnenia boli postupne rozobraté a priekopy zasypané.[1]
Zachytáva 64 miestností a chodieb kaštieľa. Hlavnými reprezentatívnymi priestormi boli tzv. Letný salón, Letná obývačka (Salón), ďalej Žltý a Knižničný salón, v ktorom sa nachádzalo 1032 titulov kníh, Grófkina obliekáreň ladená do čiernej farby a Grófska spálňa ladená do hnedej farby mahagónu, Strieborná izba, v ktorej mali svoje miesto servisy, krištáľ a strieborné príbory. Súpis pokračoval herňou, spálňami a hosťovskými izbami a izbami služobníctva s pomerne jednoduchým vybavením a povalami.
Drevenými časťami zariadenia, parketami a vzácnymi knihami kúrili.
Občianske združenie Vodný Hrad rozbehlo v roku 2008 projekt obnovy seredského kaštieľa a to bastióna – jedného z obranných objektov bývalého hradu Šintava. Na obnovu významnou čiastkou prispelo občianske združenie Vodný Hrad vďaka príspevkom známych a neznámych darcov a najmä akciovej spoločnosti Slovenské cukrovary.[2]
Okrem neustálych žiadostí o dotácie cez eurofondy a ministerstvo kultúry zriadilo mesto Sereď v roku 2019 dobrovoľnú zbierku cez transparentný účet.[3]
